About florø

Welcome to Florø, Norway’s westernmost town

Florø is a modern community, and the inhabitants take great pride in their town. The local patrotism soars high, but do not worry; they have a great sense of humor about their local patriotism and are very welcoming towards every visitor! Maybe the love for their home town partly stems from the fact that Florø is somewhat left to itself all the way out there where the coast gives way to the vast ocean, and that the livelyhood and survival has been depending greatly on hard work, both in on shore industry and off shore fishing?

Oceans, mountains, glaciers and forests. Simply a good place to live.

In Florø you can in an instant decide if you want to go for the large seagoing cod or the quick, delicate fresh water trout in lakes and rivers. If you wish to be on your own, all you have to do is pick a spot somewhere in the vast mountains stretching up towards the Ålfot glacier.

The town of Florø was founded back in 1860, and is situated in the municipality of Flora. Today’s municipal structure is a result of a merging between several smaller municipalities from 1964.

The center of Florø is in the process of redefining itself as an architectonical hotspot. The brutalist, concrete building culture that swept over Norway in the ‘60s and ‘70s never quite made it out to Florø. This is part of the reason why you don´t see many of the concrete cube buildings from that era in the center of town.

In the early 2000s, the main downtown street Strandgaten underwent a makeover, and combined with the establishing of the recreational port in the middle of town, the result is a welcoming, attractive and authentic destination, especially for tourists arriving by boat along the coast.
In short, a stay in Florø means a stay in a comfortable, easy-going community in peaceful and beautiful surroundings.

In downtown Florø you will find shopping quarters with a good selection of stores, goods and mini-malls.
Finally, we take the opportunity to mention that Florø twice has been officially branded “Norway’s coziest town” by no other than the Ministry of Environmental matters, an accolade awarded for the extensive work that has been put down in regards to environmental care.
Welcome! We look forward to seeing you, and we hope you will enjoy your stay here.
